In the end, Watson is just concerned about Holmes' life. It seems like Holmes depends a lot on Watson whenever he goes to solve his case, and there have been many incidences when Holmes could've died without Watson's help. No wonder Holmes was so desperate to hold on to Watson when he planned to go away when he gets married. Plus, I know the pain of losing someone to marriage, so I completely understand where Holmes comes from.
